As part of our mission, Friends of Reinstein Woods works to preserve the nearly 300-acres of wild space that is a hidden gem of Western New York. Our Woodland Garden will be a large enclosure that protects existing trees from grazing deer and allows the establishment of native forest wildflowers and shrubs. When the garden is fully established, it will be a peaceful and beautiful area that will also provide insights into forest ecosystems. Once the project is done, visitors and students will be able to walk inside the fence to enjoy and learn about the plants found inside.

This project is currently underway at Reinstein Woods. The fence for the enclosure will be up by the end of summer 2024. We are in the process of seeking funding for the next phase – planning the garden design, creating a stewardship plan to shepherd the current native growth into its full potential and acquiring the plants and materials needed to bring this space to life!

Why a Woodland Garden?

As part of our Forest Management Plan, creating areas of the nature preserve that are safe from grazing deer will help maintain our mature forest and the biodiversity that can be found at Reinstein Woods. Due to a lack of natural predators, the deer population in and around Reinstein Woods is unnaturally large. Their search for food often targets seedlings and native plants, which doesn’t allow for the regeneration of these plants within the forest.

Not only will the Woodland Garden provide place for native flowers, shrubs and trees to grow and thrive, it will also create a space for learning. Informational signs will be installed to provide visitors with details about the plants and their ecological importance.

Donate to our Campaign

Your gift will not only support work on the Woodland Garden project but will also support stewardship and educational programs that emphasize our mission of understanding and caring for the unique and diverse environment of Reinstein Woods.
